Richmond Council and the Climate Crisis

Statement

We, the undersigned, petition the Council to: a) Immediately declare the borough in a state of climate emergency b) set a carbon budget with annual carbon reduction targets to achieve carbon neutrality, ideally by 2025. This would be consistent with the world keeping within 1.5 degrees warming, thereby securing our children's futures along with most remaining natural habitats and ecosystems c) publish clear, easily searchable content on the Council's website outlining its climate strategy & carbon reduction commitments, along with suitable carbon reduction advice for residents; d) assemble a group of residents, selected at random, whose role will be to scrutinise proposed solutions and to support the council in securing public support for actions required to combat climate change.

Details

On May 1st, the UK became the first nation to have officially declared a state of climate emergency in response to the stark warning from the world’s scientific community that there are just 12 years left to prevent 1.5 degrees warming. The House further supports the decisions by more than 40 local authorities to pass motions declaring a climate emergency and setting net zero carbon emissions targets for their local areas to address the climate crisis.
