20mph speed limits on all roads in Ham and Petersham

Statement

We, the undersigned, petition the council to introduce 20mph speed limits for Ham and Petersham.

Details

"We believe that the current 30mph limits discourage walking and cycling and promote car use for short urban journeys. Car use is a recognised cause of air pollution, which severely impacts the long-term health of residents.  20mph speed limits create safer streets. If a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle at 30mph, 1 in 5 will be killed; if they are hit at 20mph it will be 1 in 40. A lower speed limit not only makes pedestrians and cyclists safer, it also encourages those who want to ride bikes but are too scared to do so. Existing high traffic levels create aggressive driving, more congestion and worsening pollution. Getting more people walking and cycling leads to cleaner air, safer roads and better health for everyone. The current 30mph speed limit is too fast, particularly for children, the elderly and the most vulnerable in society. Local authorities across London are introducing borough-wide 20mph speed limits on residential roads, including neighbouring Wandsworth and Hounslow, as well as Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Lewisham, Islington and Camden. The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is out of step with road safety and residents’ wishes in favouring 20mph on just a few individual roads. Making the whole area of Ham and Petersham a 20mph zone will make our streets safer and more pleasant spaces. Traffic-calming measures are not required - good signage and public education is sufficient. The Mayor of London has pledged to make streets safer by tackling road danger. His ‘Vision Zero’ aims to eliminate road traffic deaths and serious injuries by addressing the dominance of motor vehicles on London’s streets. Introducing 20mph in Ham and Petersham will be an important step in our borough supporting this ambition."
