Safer roads for parents, pupils and staff of Chase Bridge Primary School

Statement

We, the undersigned, petition the council to implement a significantly lower speed limit of 20mph and introduce speed bumps onto Kneller Road outside and in the vicinity of Chase Bridge Primary School.

Details

The main problem on this road occurs especially around the times of rush hour (morning and evening) and school drop offs and pick ups.

We have seen people blocking off resident driveways, parking at the edge of a junction so that there is no clear view of oncoming traffic, parking on the yellow zig-zags outside of the school and also parking in front of gates and on private land. (We have photographic supporting evidence of this) There are so many potential hazards created from this as more traffic build up is incurred when people park inappropriately, leading to tailbacks and buses having to swing past parked cars increasing danger to other motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

The speed with which the cars come down Kneller Road should not exceed 30mph in accordance with the speed limit. However, we see many cars travelling at speeds much closer to or in excess of 40mph. Being right outside a primary school, we find it terrifying that one day one of these speeding cars will lose control or not be able to stop in time causing possible fatalities. Or somebody will pull out of a blind junction due to cars blocking their view and either hit a person or another car.

These are both very real risks given children by their very nature are prone to the odd lapse of concentration or erratic behaviour.

Despite the current calming measures, namely the 30mph sign and the traffic lights, we still find this to be a terrible road, and there have been several very near misses of children being hit by cars, as they make their way to school, and of cars hitting each other. This is made worse on rugby international days when there are so many lorries on the roads.

We can see that attempts have been made to reinforce the speed limit, but myself and other parents feel speed bumps or other traffic calming methods are desperately needed here.

In considering options, the key point to address would be ensuring the measures are in place at peak times. We desperately want to keep our children and our school safe and the only way this will happen is if something is done about Kneller Road now. We strongly urge that action is taken in advance of a serious incident taking place.
