Cycle lanes on Lonsdale Road (Barnes)

Statement

I don’t want cars to park on the cycles lanes on Lonsdale Road. I want a safer journey for cyclists and children.

Details

Everyday hundreds of cyclist use Lonsdale Road to commute to work towards central London. (Via Hammersmith Bridge). There are 3 big schools on the road and some students also cycle to school. While this is the case, there are many cars that park on the dedicated and marked cycle lanes. Given cars regularly go over the 20mph speed limit on Lonsdale Road (especially when it’s empty or less traffic), those cars parking directly on these cycles lanes(!), especially between Verdun Road and Barnes Sports club, make it very unsafe for cyclists. Please make dedicated cycle lanes and enforce speed limits.

Council response

As the petition has not reached the threshold for a debate at Transport and Air Quality or Full Council, the LBRuT Traffic & Engineering department have been asked to give you a formal response.

It is accepted that parking within the existing advisory cycle lanes on Lonsdale Road does not provide as much amenity as a mandatory cycle lane.  Your proposal has been shared with the Parking Policy section so when the B1 controlled parking zone (CPZ) is next reviewed, consideration will be given to what, if any changes, to waiting (parking) restrictions are desirable;  Particularly on the section of Lonsdale Road between Verdun Road and Gerard Road where the majority of the southbound lane has no waiting (parking) restrictions.

I have taken the opportunity to review the latest speed/volume surveys (2024) for Lonsdale Road.  This shows the average speeds to be 21.6 mph and is consistent with the 20mph posted speed limit.  Since the closure of Hammersmith Bridge traffic levels are much reduced – approximately 4,500 vehicles per day over 24 hours.  The existing speeds/traffic levels do not make the case for immediate prioritisation of this route,  although this is subject to change, if  (for example) Hammersmith Bridge were to reopen to vehicular traffic.

Thank you for raising your concerns.
