Alleviate "rat running" in Cambridge Park, Alexandra Road and Morley Road

Statement

We call on the Council to investigate our concerns regarding rat running through Cambridge Park, Alexandra Road and Morley Road and, subject to the results of the assessment, consider options for improvement, in particular consideration of a 'no right turn' restriction from Cambridge Park into Alexandra Road.

Details

When traffic is heavy on Richmond Road eastbound towards the traffic lights at the junction of St Margaret's Road, a significant number of vehicles seek to bypass the light-controlled junction by turning right onto Cambridge Park at the Rising Sun, before turning right into Alexandra Road, left into Morley Road, and then on to Richmond Road. Residents experience a significant volume of rat running of this kind, particularly in the morning rush hour and on other occasions when traffic is heavy. Vehicle speeds and numbers on these residential streets presents a risk to pedestrians - including children going to Deer Park School - and can lead to traffic backing up so as to block movements of residents in Morley, Alexander and part of Denton Roads. Having considered a range of options, residents consider the most light-touch and appropriate measure would be to implement a "no right turn" restriction from Cambridge Park into Alexandra Road, with other options considered if post-implementation monitoring indicates traffic volumes and speeds remain high at peak times.
