1. Orleans Road is an increasingly popular pedestrian route, which is heavily used by residents and by many other people, including many children and families, accessing Orleans Gardens (including the playground), Orleans House Gallery, Marble Hill Park, and Hammerton’s Ferry. 2. It is also a narrow road where, in many parts, there is either no pavement or the pavement is not usable due to pavement parking. The limited pavements available towards the top of the road are in poor condition. As a result, the carriageway itself is extensively used by pedestrians, who come into conflict with motor vehicles. 3. Several factors have contributed to increased use of the road in recent times, including events held at Orleans House Gallery, deliveries, increased visitor numbers at Marble Hill House, and popularity with dog walkers and others. 4. We are concerned by the volume of traffic, traffic speeds, and air quality impact on Orleans Road given it is shared space for pedestrians and vehicles for the reasons set out above. 5. Options we ask the Council to assess include: (i) resurfacing some or all of the road to clearly indicate to drivers it is shared use space and to improve conditions for pedestrians; (ii) improving signage to reduce traffic speeds; (iii) reviewing the operation of junctions (including with Chapel Road) to slow vehicles; (iv) reviewing parking arrangements near Orleans Gardens to reduce traffic volumes; and (v) reviewing delivery and special events arrangements at Orleans House Gallery to reduce traffic volumes.
