Reduce through traffic (rat-running) on Gloucester Road and Kew Green

Statement

Introduce a one way system or a traffic barrier on the short western section of Gloucester Road, between Cambridge Road and Kew Green.

Details

1. Prior to the Council’s decision to introduce the residents’ parking system in our area, Gloucester Road and Kew Green were quiet residential roads with little vehicular traffic, almost exclusively serving local purposes and much used by children and cyclists travelling to and from the local schools and nurseries. 2. The road is now subject to regular intense volumes of traffic diverting from the South Circular during peak periods of back-up from Kew Bridge/Chiswick roundabout. It even now features as a suitable alternative on satnavs. 3. We are concerned about the increased volume of traffic, speed, noise and air pollution, and worried there will soon be a serious accident involving children, senior citizens or cyclists. The driving style of some people using our road as a short cut is often reckless, including speeds over 40mph and frequently driving on the pavement. 4. We understand the Council must prioritise its funds, but wish for the road to be made one-way, for a short stretch, from Kew Green to Cambridge Road, which should address this issue quickly and at minimal cost, while still allowing access for residents, visitors and deliveries. The additional signage could be affixed to existing signposts. 5. Alternatively a barrier could be placed at the western end of Gloucester Road to stop vehicle access to Kew Green. This would also be an inexpensive option which has been adopted in neighbouring boroughs.
