Declare a nature/ecological Emergency

Statement

act to put local nature in recovery. We ask that they use this to inform all planning decisions, to ensure equitable access to green spaces and to create more space for nature. We are asking for immediate action to reverse the catastrophic declines in nature and to creatively restore our urban and green/blue spaces to support biodiversity and the human-nature connection, which has significant benefits for wellbeing. We are asking the council to consider requiring swift tiles or boxes on new build properties and to continue to manage roadside verges for wildife. We are also asking for the cessation of the use of biocides and to ensure wildlife-friendly practices in all council-managed gardens and parks. In addition, there should be enforcement of planning regulations around paved surfaces.

Details

The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. The 2019 State of Nature report https://nbn.org.uk/stateofnature2019/ should that 41% of species have declined since 1970 with 15% of species threatened with extinction. These measures will not only benefit wildlife, but also the wellbeing of local residents, mitigate climate change and help to reduce extreme heat and flooding. (Evidence in support of the wellbeing benefits of nature can be found through the University of Derby https://www.derby.ac.uk/research/centres-groups/nature-connectedness-research-group/)
