Statement

We, the undersigned, petition the Council to Improve the lighting of pavements in Ham.

Details

New road lighting is to be installed in Ashburnham Road. I believe that it would be helpful to local residents if thought were to be given to the provision of better lighting for some of the pavements in the same area. Ashburnham Road is perhaps somewhat unusual in that large parts of the pavement between the bottom of Woodville Road and lower end of the road by the mini roundabout near Thames Young Mariners are set back from the road and shrouded by intervening trees. In consequence, the pavements are often extremely poorly lit. Because of this, many local residents choose to walk along the roadway itself, which creates a danger both for them and for traffic using the road. Those who do choose the pavement rather than the road are faced with potentially poorly-lit trip hazards and unlit “secret gardens” between some of the blocks of houses where others can lurk unseen. In essence, therefore, I believe that whichever route one chooses, one is faced with potential health and safety hazards. These same concerns equally apply to parts of Perryfield Way and Stuart Road where the lighting of pavements is also poor. I recognise that the level of illumination was considered adequate at the time that the estate was built, but standards change over time and I suggest that we should be looking to the future rather than to the past. It is also the case that, as trees have matured over the intervening years, the levels of illumination reaching the pavements has inevitably dropped. As a further consideration, in the past when we had a local police officer, I recall him commenting that the lighting here was amongst the worst he was aware of in the borough and he stated that, in his view, better levels of illumination would help reduce crime and delinquency in the area. For all these reasons, I hope that the Council will view the representations made here favourably and that, in consequence, they will agree to implement the work suggested above.
