Free up the existing cycle lanes on Staines Road by changing parking restrictions.

Statement

We, the undersigned, petition the Council to make Staines Road, especially from Twickenham Green to the intersection with Sixth Cross Road, more bicycle friendly by disallowing parking during peak times.

Details

Currently the Staines Road cycle paths are unusable as vehicles are always parked along both sides. This means children riding to school either use the busy pavements, or are forced to try to safely navigate around parked cars and rush hour traffic. As a parent it is difficult to supervise younger children cycling on the pavement whilst yourself cycling on the congested road. Given the Covid-19 pandemic we think this is especially important as many of us will try to avoid public transport where possible to slow the spread of the virus. Once schools go back full-time the demand for public transport will definitely outstrip supply. The houses along that stretch fortunately have driveways big enough for one or more cars. Let's try to enable and encourage people to be greener and healthier, and at the same time slow the spread of Covid-19. Also this would leave public transport options free for those unable to walk or cycle, such as older or disabled people.
