Keep E-Bike Choice (and Lime Bikes) for Barnes

Statement

Retain Lime Bikes in Barnes – or Hold a Full Public Consultation Lime bikes have become an essential part of daily travel for many Barnes residents, particularly since the closure of Hammersmith Bridge severely disrupted connections to Hammersmith, the Tube and central London. The popularity of Lime bikes in Barnes is clear. They are widely used by residents commuting, running errands and travelling locally, while alternative schemes have seen far lower uptake. For many people, Lime bikes have provided a practical way to cross the bridge quickly and safely — helping restore some of the lost connectivity caused by the bridge closure. Removing this option without consulting residents risks taking away a solution that is clearly working. Residents deserve a choice in how they travel. We therefore ask the council to either: • Retain Lime bikes alongside other schemes, allowing residents genuine choice; or • Conduct a full public consultation so that residents and riders can express their preference before any final decision is made. Barnes has faced years of disruption due to the closure of Hammersmith Bridge. Any transport decision affecting the area should take into account the real travel needs of residents. Please support this petition to retain Lime bikes or ensure residents are consulted before any change is made.

Details

On Monday 16th March 7pm the Council Transport and Air Quality Committee will hold a review of E-Bike provision at York House Civic Centre. It has been reported by The Standard that the choice will be removed and that one operator has gained favour using a significant financial incentive.

Rejection Reason

Unfortunately, the actions sought through this petition are not open to the Council. The Council has undertaken a lawful procurement process that has resulted in the proposed award of a contract to a new provider. That decision was lawfully taken and it is not open to the Council to revisit that decision without being exposed to significant legal risk. Accordingly, the petition is rejected.
