I was diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, a chronic condition that brings about debilitating fatigue and pain. Strangely, these distressing symptoms began after a smart meter was installed in my home. Like many others facing similar conditions, I have experienced EMF (Electromagnetic Field) sensitivity and its well-documented symptoms that follow exposure to smart meters. Sadly, the current legislation under Section 162 of the Water Industry Act mandates that we have no option to refuse the installation of a SMART water meter. Thames Water's insistence on adhering to this law means that individuals like myself, who are sensitive to EMF radiation, are left with no recourse to protect our health within our own homes. It's imperative to recognize that while smart meters might serve the efficiency goals of water utilities, they pose genuine health risks to people suffering from EMF sensitivity. It's essential to ensure that as individuals, we retain the right to safeguard our health and well-being. Those diagnosed with conditions such as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, or any illness exacerbated by EMF exposure, should be allowed the right to opt-out of using SMART meters. This is not just about comfort but is a pressing health concern that puts our well-being on the line. Moreover, extensive studies and testimonies have demonstrated that prolonged exposure to EMF can be harmful to those with pre-existing conditions or sensitivities. Not having the choice to opt-out feels like an infringement on personal health rights. The solution is simple: amend the current legislation to include provisions for those with documented health conditions related to EMF sensitivity, granting them the legal right to refuse a water smart meter installation. This not only respects individual health needs but also acknowledges the broader spectrum of public health concerns. I urge Thames Water and the relevant legislative bodies to consider the physical and emotional turmoil experienced by many and to take action to amend current policies. We must push for legal changes that allow people the freedom to choose when it comes to health and tech in their homes. Please, sign this petition to support the right for individuals to refuse the installation of smart meters, where such installations may impact their health. Let us stand together to make a change for a healthier future while still striving for technological progress that respects personal well-being. avatar of the starter Tracy Peake Petition Starter Media enquiries

- The UKHSA guidance Smart meters: radio waves and health states that exposure to radio waves does not provide a basis to decline having a smart meter and therefore any letters are unlikely to have the desired effect.
- Section 162 of the Water Industry Act 1991 (WIA) gives undertakers the power to install a meter for volumetric charging. This act is government legislation and is outside the Council's control.
