We, the undersigned, respectfully petition Richmond Borough Council to consider the establishment of a selective state school or grammar school within the borough.
Currently, Richmond Borough lacks a selective state or grammar school. As a result: - Many academically capable children must commute daily to schools in neighbouring boroughs. - Families are relocating to other areas solely to access selective school catchment zones. - The borough risks losing high-achieving students and engaged families to other communities. This situation places undue stress on children and families, contributes to traffic congestion, and undermines Richmond’s ability to retain and nurture local talent. We urge the Council to: - Conduct a feasibility study on establishing a selective state or grammar school within Richmond Borough. - Engage with the Department for Education and relevant stakeholders to explore funding and partnership options. - Consider long-term educational planning that includes provision for academically selective education within borough boundaries. Creating a selective school in Richmond would: - Provide equitable access to high-quality education for local children. - Reduce daily travel burdens and improve student wellbeing. - Strengthen Richmond’s reputation as a borough that values academic excellence and educational choice. We believe this initiative will benefit not only current residents but also future generations of Richmond families.
