As CPZs have proliferated, emanating south from Fulwell Station, we have seen a gradual increase of non-resident parking in our road. This increase has been exponential since the introduction of the CPZ on Fulwell Road. Many of us can provide anecdotal accounts of people parking in Sunnyside and walking off, through the cut-through to Fulwell Road; the cars left for the entirety of the day. We have been led to understand that, as we flow into Princes Road, consideration of Sunnyside for controlled parking is linked to the decision made for Princes. Respectfully, what is the justification for this approach? Sunnyside does not provide an onward route from Princes, but simply loops back. In short, Sunnyside is discrete and, therefore, one would logically think, it should considered as such for the purpose of CPZ. Key reasons for implementation of CPZ: 1. Lack of parking for residents. Since Fulwell Road has been included in the CPZ scheme, the increase in daytime and weekend parking by non-residents has meant that resident parking has become significantly more difficult. Often Sunnyside residents find ourselves having to park on Princes Road. This is obviously not acceptable in any sense, but especially not when parents have children and shopping they need to unload. 2. Poor and inconsiderate parking. Cars parking diagonally across the inside east and west corners of the road are now a major hazard. Not only does this make manoeuvrability through the street very difficult, it also poses a significant safety concern; there have been times when emergency services have been unable to gain access, for example. 3. Safety of young children - blind spots and lack of driver awareness (local knowledge). There are lots of young children in Sunnyside, many of whom attend Stanly Road school. The increase in non-resident traffic allied to bad parking, has led to a less safe environment for the children as they walk to and from school. Blind spots and lack of driver awareness and local knowledge are particularly worrying issues. 4. Lack of space Since we have suffered from the displacement caused by the Fulwell Road CPZ, the lack of free space in the road has been very noticeable. This means that where once we had a road that could breathe and was peaceful, we now have a road that is choked and resembles a car park. This is not good for the residents’ physical or mental health This petition represents the majority of residents who are in favour of the implementation of controlled parking in Sunnyside. It would be ideal if this representation were sufficient for you to make a decision in favour of the CPZ. If that is not the case then we are very willing to field questions or open a dialogue with you, of course.
