Ban single use coffee cups

Statement

Ban the sale of single use coffee cups from being used in the borough and for people to be forced to bring their own reusable cups

Details

The takeaway coffee cups that litter our streets are a shocking example of how lazy we have become as a society. They are left on top of bins, on the ground and discarded on the floor. When people can bring their own containers instead there is no need to use these anymore.

Rejection Reason

The Council is supportive of the spirit of this petition and are making efforts to persuade businesses to reduce their environmental impact.  However, the Council does not have the power to ban single use coffee cups (except within the premises/budgets under its control). This would require legislation similar to the Environmental Protection (Plastic Straws, Cotton Buds and Stirrers) (England) Regulations 2020 (SI 2020/971) which are mostly in force from 1 October 2020.

The Council is thus unable to accept this petition as it requests the Council to take action that it does not have the power to take.
