Reopen Recyling Centres

Statement

We, the undersigned, petition the Council to re-open the Recycling centres whilst there are Covid 19 restrictions.

Details

The lack of recycling / waste disposal is unsanitary, dangerous and is leading to fly-tipping. With sensible social distancing and protective equipment (no different to waste collectors) - the risk is limited whilst the upside in social health and wellbeing significant.

This petition ran from 01/05/2020 to 01/08/2020.

Council response

Current Government guidance does not support journeys being made to the Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs) as essential travel.

The Council provides weekly refuse and recycling collection services as a priority.

The Council is aware of new Government guidance to be published regarding journeys to HWRCs and in response will make decisions regarding re-opening the Townmead Road site.

Work has commenced on plans to re-open the site in conjunction with key stakeholders.

There is no evidence to support that closure of the HWRC has directly resulted in increased fly-tipping.

On the basis that social distancing will be a requirement there is a clear risk to staff and users which will need to be managed when the site re-opens.
