Residents and businesses had the opportunity last month, to quiz the Leader of the
Council, Lord True, and senior cabinet colleagues, on ‘All Things Twickenham’. Topics
included the train station, post office site and high street regeneration. Following

Embankment to receive further improvements
Twickenham Embankment is set for further improvements thanks to Richmond Council.
The 21-week improvement begins on the 30 September and will see resurfacing, new
street furniture and improved lighting at the area to the western side of the embankment.

Sorting office gets planning permission
Major regeneration plans for the former Royal Mail Sorting Office in Twickenham
will create 110 new homes, plus a new community building. It will also see the creation
of a new public piazza adjoining London Road, which will provide an attractive spot
for people to gather at the entrance of Riverside Walk. The opening of the riverside
area means the public will have access to certain areas of the riverside for the
first time.

Residents took the time last July to nominate over 140 local people for their role
in improving your local community. Over 30 people were selected to attend a special
celebration event in September hosted by the Leader of the Council. There are winners

Norse mythology comes alive at Champions Wharf
The new Viking play boat has arrived at the borough’s first permanent play beach.
At the opening last month, nearly 100 children attended throughout the day to take
part in a host of activities, including building sandcastles and digging for treasure.
The new beach is open all year round.

Come along to the ‘Full of Life’ fair and plan for the future
The borough’s Full of Life fair kicks off next week on the 1 October at the Harlequins
Stadium – the Stoop. Over 60 stalls with information, activities, including Zumba
gold and Pilates, workshops to help you use your computer, freebies and a complimentary
lunch.

New Dispersal Zone launched
Richmond Council in partnership with the local Police have introduced a new Designated
Dispersal Area in the Marble Hill House area to deal with cases of anti-social behaviour.
Those who behave in an inappropriate manner will be asked to leave the area or could
be subject to arrest.

Eid Family Fun Day
On Saturday 19 October, Richmond College in Twickenham will be celebrating Eid-ul-Adha
with a family fun day – including the chance to go on a tethered hot air balloon.
The organizers are looking for volunteers to help on the day – with a free trip
in the balloon as a reward for the first 10 people to come forward.

Singing in the rain in Twickenham
Over 100 wannabe gangsters and their molls braved the elements last month to attend
a free cinema screening of Bugsy Malone at the Diamond Jubilee Gardens. This was
just one of a whole host of family activities Richmond Council has hosted on the
Riverside this summer, including music concerts, a bandstand programme and petting
zoo.

Postbox reinstated on London Road
Following representations to the Royal Mail, the postbox outside the Old Sorting
Office (29 London Road) has been reinstated. The new box is larger and has up-to-date
information regarding posting times. A larger business postbox for franked mail
will be located outside 46-48 London Road.

Watch a flick on Twickenham Green
Local restaurant Arthurs on the Green has just released its October film screening
schedule. Every week, the chef creates a menu around the subject of the film. The
evenings begin at 7.00pm with dinner and then the film at 8.30pm. Homemade icecream
is handed out for the authentic cinema experience.

The Mulberry Centre in Twickenham is appealing for DVDs and CDs for a charity sale
in the Atrium at West Middlesex University Hospital on 24 October to raise money
for people affected by cancer. If you have any that you wish to donate, drop them
into the Mulberry Centre now!

Food businesses commit to healthier takeaways
Several local businesses have been awarded Healthier Catering Commitment certificates
after going the extra mile. These include: Twickenham Charcoal Grill, Village Pizza,
Tasty Garden and Sunshine, Zizou, Il Vero Gusto, Lulu’z, Bellissimo, Regal, Rich,
York Street Café and Abacus Cafe. Making a few changes such as using less salt and
healthier unsaturated oil can make a difference to the occasional takeaway treat.

GCSE celebrations at all schools
Secondary schools across the borough have been celebrating the improvements in local
GCSE results. Provisional figures show that 85% of pupils achieved five or more
A*-C grades and 68% received five or more A*-C grades including English and maths,
both figures an improvement on last year’s results.

The Caring Café for people affected by dementia is now part of the Carers Hub. Richmond
and Kingston Crossroads, as sub-contractors to Richmond Carers Centre will, together

Help shape the future of voluntary sector organisations
Richmond CVS is managing an important research project to review the current state
of the local voluntary sector. The ‘State of the Sector’ project has been commissioned
by the Richmond Transforming Local Infrastructure Partnership and Richmond Parish
Lands Charity. The research will provide shape, scope and facts for local voluntary
organisations, funders and cross-sectors partners over the next few years.

ArtsRichmond’s annual Young Writers’ Festival runs from September 2013 to January
2014 and encourages young people to show off their creative writing skills and express

180 local young people taking part in the Challenge Network, powered by the National
Citizen Service, are spending the last weekend of September with The Environment
Trust, Marble Hill Play Centre and Grenfell Housing Association. This is just the

Richmond Film Society's 51st season opened with the Danish film ‘A Hijacking’ on
17 September at St Mary's University. The season runs until April and comprises
15 films of international repute from the UK and Europe, North and South America,
