Local community receives uplifting makeover
A community centre which promotes a vibrant self-sustaining community in an estate
in Barnes has received a £300k overhaul thanks to Richmond Council. The fresh look
Castelnau Community Centre showcased the massive improvements made to the exterior
and interior parts of the building at a grand opening last month. Thanks to the
Council’s Uplift programme, a considerable amount of money has been spent since
June.

Towpath is overhauled
Mortlake Towpath has received significant improvements thanks to £160k of funding
from Richmond Council. Earlier this month the Council upgraded a large section of
the Towpath with a permanent granite surface to help prevent large puddles from
forming after high tides and rainfall, which often left the path impassable. The
upgrades make the area more accessible – particularly for commuters.

Recognising your local community
Residents took the time last July to nominate over 140 local people for their role
in improving your local community. Over 30 people were selected to attend a special
celebration event in September hosted by the Leader of the Council. There are winners

Come along to the ‘Full of Life’ fair and plan for the future
The borough’s Full of Life fair kicks off next week on the 1 October at the Harlequins
Stadium – the Stoop. Over 60 stalls with information, activities, including Zumba
gold and Pilates, workshops to help you use your computer, freebies and a complimentary
lunch.

Your Mortlake
Over 20 residents came along to the Your Mortlake event in August, run by Richmond
Council’s Community Links and RHP’s Community Engagement teams. Local residents
had the chance to put ideas forward for community projects, as well as meet local
groups and organisations. Locals also found out how to turn ideas in to action,
and how to access funding.

East Sheen Common entrance improvements now complete
Work to improve the run down entrance of East Sheen Common has now been completed.
This includes replacing the fence line, replacing broken furniture, improving the
drainage, realigning the entrance gate to improve vehicle access, creating of a
stag beetle loggery, and footpath improvements.

The Big Barnes Ponder
The Barnes Town team is planning a community event to create a vision for the future
of the area. Residents, community groups and local businesses are invited to share
ideas and hear from experts about how Barnes can be improved. Come to the Big Barnes
Ponder on 19 October at the Old Sorting Office, have your say and influence the
future of your village.

Installing safety gates
Local police in Barnes have been working with the local community to install alley
gates in North Worple Way and Mortlake High Street, to minimise the access by members
of the public. The impact of this project has been very positive and reduced the
amount of fly tipping, dog fouling and crime in the area.

Happy 10th birthday Barnes Literary Society
To celebrate their 10th anniversary, Barnes Literary Society has planned an exciting
programme, starting with award-winning television broadcaster, novelist and journalist,
Gavin Esler, on 16 October. Having interviewed leaders from all over the world,
Gavin is fascinated by power and leadership.

Fashion show for charity in St Mary’s Church
Come and be inspired by the latest collections from eight of Barnes’ fashion boutiques
on 17 October. At the after-show party in Kitson Hall, join your friends with a

GCSE celebrations at all schools
Secondary schools across the borough have been celebrating the improvements in local
GCSE results. Provisional figures show that 85% of pupils achieved five or more
A*-C grades and 68% received five or more A*-C grades including English and maths,
both figures an improvement on last year’s results.

Food businesses commit to healthier takeaways
Local takeaways have been awarded Healthier Catering Commitment certificates after
going the extra mile. They include: Caffe Al Fresco, Country Dish, Leonardo’s Pasticceria,
Pickle and Rye, R and P, Stockholm Deli, TJs café and Villa Rosa. Making a few changes
such as using less salt and healthier unsaturated oil can make a difference to the
occasional takeaway treat.

Richmond Food Bank opens new distribution points
The Richmond Food Bank, operating from the Vineyard Community Centre, supplied nearly
six tons of emergency food to 710 local people in the first half of 2013. The Food
Bank is now opening two satellite distribution points this autumn at the BridgeLink
Centre Isleworth and the Castelnau Centre in Barnes. Richmond’s Whole Foods Market
opening in October is also supporting the food bank.

Celebrating the best in world cinema
Richmond Film Society's 51st season opened with the Danish film ‘A Hijacking’ on
17 September at St Mary's University. The season runs until April and comprises
15 films of international repute from the UK and Europe, North and South America,
Japan and Israel. New members and guests are always very welcome.

Shene Sports and Fitness Centre has started its new sports activity and fitness

Third successive record-breaking year for Richmond Park Academy
Richmond Park Academy has celebrated its highest ever GCSE results. A record 91%
of RPA students who sat their GCSEs in 2013 achieved at least 5 A*-C grades. “This
is our third consecutive year of record GCSE improvement, demonstrating that we
are delivering sustained improvement” said chair of governors, Simon Danciger. Come

Local football team recruit new players
The Sheen Lions Football Club is a youth football club based in East Sheen. It is
affiliated to the Surrey County FA and provides coaching and organised match programmes
for around 300 boys between the ages of 6 to 18. It is currently looking for quality
players in all age groups from U7s to U18s.

Countdown to local cinema opening
The Olympic Studios in Church Road, Barnes will reopen on 14 October with two cinema
screens, a café, dining room and members’ club. Boutique in style, with great sound
and picture, the cinema will show a comprehensive range of quality mainstream and
art house films on general release.

Helping the homeless
The local Safer Neighbourhood team, along with Friends of Barnes Common, has teamed
up with outreach workers from Spear, the homelessness charity, to visit Barnes Common
to meet rough sleepers. The visit aimed to reduce the number of homeless people
sleeping on the common and help them find suitable accommodation.

World Alzheimer’s Dementia Month
The Caring Café for people affected by dementia is now part of the Carers Hub. Richmond
and Kingston Crossroads, as sub-contractors to Richmond Carers Centre will, together
with the Alzheimer’s Society, continue to deliver this outstanding service. Open
the first and third Saturday of each month at the Sheen Lane Centre.

Help shape the future of voluntary sector organisations
Richmond CVS is managing an important research project to review the current state
of the local voluntary sector. The ‘State of the Sector’ project has been commissioned
by the Richmond Transforming Local Infrastructure Partnership and Richmond Parish
Lands Charity. The research will provide shape, scope and facts for local voluntary
organisations, funders and cross-sectors partners over the next few years.

Young people getting involved
180 local young people taking part in the Challenge Network, powered by the National
Citizen Service, are spending the last weekend of September with The Environment
Trust, Marble Hill Play Centre and Grenfell Housing Association. This is just the
latest in a number of local projects aimed at challenging stereotypes and working
to improve the local area.

The syllabus for the Performing Arts Festival is now available from libraries, information

The Big London Energy Switch draws on the collective purchasing power of potentially
more than one million Londoners to encourage energy companies to offer lower tariffs

their energy bills and complex tariffs and work out if they could save.

Prizes for young writers
ArtsRichmond’s annual Young Writers’ Festival runs from September 2013 to January 2014 and encourages young people to show off their creative writing skills and express their thoughts, hopes and dreams in any format.
